Seawater Desalination Storage Solution with FEB Bolted Steel Tank

FBE epoxy coated steel tanks are the optimal choice for desalination water storage. The food-grade epoxy lining provides safe, pollution-free water contact, and offers reliable protection against low-salinity corrosion. With a dense smooth coating to prevent biofouling and scaling, plus robust steel structure and competitive cost, it achieves long-term stable operation for fresh water storage.

    description

Special attention must be paid to corrosion prevention when storing desalinated seawater (product water).
    Characteristics of desalinated seawater:
    1. Low mineralization, low TDS, low chloride ion content, extremely low salt content, classified as low-corrosive freshwater.
    2. Pure water quality, few impurities, low turbidity, free of silt, colloids, and extremely low suspended solids.
    3. Slightly corrosive (minor acidic risk). Poor buffering capacity after desalination, pH tends to be low, prone to carbonization, and can cause oxygen corrosion of ordinary carbon steel.
    4. Highly susceptible to microbial growth. Pure water/low-salinity water has low nutrient content, but a high risk of biofilm formation and algal growth on the inner walls.
5.Extremely low scaling tendency. Low calcium and magnesium hardness, making it less prone to scaling.
Although desalinated seawater has low salinity, it is prone to rusting and pitting corrosion, and cannot be stored directly in bare carbon steel tanks. FBE epoxy resin tanks with food-grade epoxy coating (compatible with Akzo system) are recommended.

Why Choose FBE Fusion Bonded Epoxy Coated Steel Tanks for Desalination Water?

The fusion bonded epoxy (FBE) steel tanks lined with AkzoNobel epoxy resin (Interzone 505/670HS) have the advantages in strong structure, good resistance to chloride ions, food grade, and high cost performance.
    • Excellent Water Compatibility
FBE epoxy coating is non-toxic, tasteless and drinking water grade compliant. It has no chemical reaction with desalinated fresh water, no dissolution or secondary pollution, and ensures long-term safe water storage.
    • Moderate Corrosion Resistance for Low-salinity Water
Desalination fresh water features low TDS, low chloride and weak corrosiveness. High-performance epoxy lining (AkzoNobel Interzone series) effectively prevents steel substrate oxidation, rust and internal corrosion, fully adapting to long-term fresh water immersion.
    • Superior Anti-fouling & Smooth Surface
The dense, seamless epoxy film forms a smooth inner wall. It resists algae growth, microbial adhesion and sludge deposition, keeping water clean and reducing daily maintenance costs.
    • High Structural Stability & Durability
Combined with the high mechanical strength of carbon steel and the chemical stability of epoxy resin, FBE steel tanks deliver strong structural performance, good impact resistance and a service life of 15–20 years.
    • Cost-effective & Economical Solution
Compared with stainless steel tanks and GFS glass-fused-to-steel tanks, FBE epoxy coated tanks have lower investment cost. They balance anti-corrosion performance and budget, becoming the most cost-effective option for desalinated fresh water storage.
