GFS Sludge Storage Tanks Special for Aggressive Biosolids

Sludge storage tanks for wastewater treatment required highly anti-corrosion performance because sludge is chemically aggressive and biologically active. Glass fused to steel is a permanent, molecular bond created by fusing a specially formulated silica-based glass enamel to a base sheet of steel at very high temperatures (around 820°C / 1500°F), the GFS tanks combine the advantages of both materials -- the strength and flexibility of steel and excellent anti-corrosion properties of glass.

    description

Sludge is chemically aggressive and biologically active, which requires the storage tank has highly corrosion performance. The Glass fused to steel (GFS) fused glass frit to High-strength TRS (titanium-rich steel) plates at temperature around 820°C / 1500°F. This creates an inorganic, non-porous barrier that is molecularly bonded to the steel substrate.

    Material Characteristics of Glass-Fused-to-Steel Tanks

-Low Carbon, High Strength, High Titanium.

The steel substrate employed in the construction of glass-fused-to-steel tanks is a special high strength enamelled steel with a unique design and superior properties. Its mechanical properties, including yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation, far exceed those of conventional steel sheets.

The reason why use Glass-Fused-to-Steel bolted tanks to store sludge:

Sludge contains Cl⁻, H₂S, organic acids, etc. Prolonged storage can easily lead to spoilage and foul odor. Therefore, sludge storage should focus on corrosion resistance and leakage prevention.

Acid and H_2S Resistance: The glass surface is virtually immune to the corrosive effects of the sulfuric acid and volatile fatty acids (VFAs) produced during sludge storage. 100% Holiday-Free Integrity: Every Enamel panel passed the high-voltage spark test. In sludge applications, this prevents sub-film corrosion and structural leaks that are common in epoxy-lined tanks.

Low-Friction Surface: The ultra-smooth, vitreous enamel finish prevents sludge from "scaling" or adhering to the tank walls.

Hardness of enamel: Fused with glass under high temperature, the coating has a hardness around 6.0 Mohs, which can effectively prevent impurities in the sludge from scratching its surface.

Rapid installation: Enamel panels are modularly processed in the factory, do not need welded on-site. The whole GFS bolted tank consists of enamel panel, self-locked bolts, sealant, etc, which make it flexible to install.

1.The advantage comparesGFS tanks to Concrete for sludge storage:

Concrete is porous and susceptible to acid attack, leading to micro-cracking and groundwater contamination. GFS is 100% impermeable, factory-tested at 1500V, and offers a significantly higher ROI over its 30–50 year lifespan due to minimal maintenance requirements.

2.The advantage comparesGFS tanks to epoxy coated steel (FBE) tank for sludge storage:

The surface of epoxy coated steel (FBE) tank is fusion bonded epoxy, the thickest of surface coating is around 300um and the hardness is 2.5 Mohs, in this situation, the surface is easy to scratch if the sludge contains particles. The hardness of GFS tank is around 6.0 Mohs which can effectively prevent impurities in the sludge from scratching its surface.
